Experience the exciting world of food with our senses!

A confident and resource-conserving approach to food needs to be learned: The Wiener Tafel Sensory Lab is a workshop that brings the world of food closer: through experimentation, participants learn how to assess the quality of food using their senses. Food waste is avoided and important resources are conserved.

In Austria, around 760,000 tons of food are thrown away every year, 577,000 tons of which are considered avoidable. The individual contribution to this is often underestimated, as private households account for more than half of the food thrown away.

The Wiener Tafel Sensory Lab is working to counteract this: The interactive workshop is all about training your own sensory perception and imparting knowledge about our common basis of life.

The workshop is accompanied by trained tutors. These include people with learning difficulties. After extensive training, they can take on the role of experts, guide the stations and impart their knowledge.

Since 1999, Wiener Tafel has been saving up to four tons of edible food from being thrown away every day and distributing it to around 100 social institutions. In addition to providing food to people at risk of poverty, it also plays an important role in terms of sustainability: food waste is one of the biggest climate sinners; avoiding it can help reduce CO2 emissions by up to a tenth.
